Welcome to Irish Studies

Ireland is known as the world's smallest cultural superpower, a country claimed as the point of origin for seventy million people across the globe but unable to sustain its own population of four and a half million. Ireland's four Nobel literature laureates and five Nobel peace laureates are signposts to the twin concerns of creativity and conflict that have animated the last two centuries.

Launched in 2004, Emory's Irish Studies builds on our tremendous strengths in teaching and research in Irish literature, arts and culture. Our students work with Emory's extraordinary collection of Irish literary archives ranging from W.B. Yeats and the Revival to Seamus Heaney and contemporary Irish poetry. Irish Studies is housed within Emory's English Department and introduces students to leading scholarship on Ireland through courses, seminars, readings and lectures. Interested students may also study in Ireland either in Semester or Year Abroad programs in Belfast, Dublin or Galway.
